Web directories are often presupposed as search engines, but that is not the case.  A search engine displays lists of web pages according to keywords while a web directory lists websites and links them to other websites by category and sub-category.  For example, you are looking for a part-time job, search engines will list all web entries containing the exact words while web directories will guide you to the sites where you can be hired for a part-time job.

There are a lot of web directories like shopping directory that gives you the list of sites where you can purchase goods, online games directory for sites that offers the latest online games, business web directory that lists all websites that sells products or services, and others... the possibilities are endless.  While the most popular  directories are Yahoo! and Google, DMOZ tops Directory 108's list of most visited directories.
